Could an alkaline body ph actually contain or kill cancer cells?

I read online that cancer cells cannot survive in an alkaline environment (a blood ph level of 8.4).

I have a friend whose mother is suffering with cancer (not sure what kind) and since it has affected her liver, the doctor put her on a very restrictive diet. She only eats light foods like farina and milk. Milk is slightly acidic, so it really perplexes me as to why the doctor is telling her to eat such things if it might worsen the cancer.

I wonder if drinking vegetable juice instead is a smarter option? Do you think there is any hope in combatting cancer with alkaline foods?
